Celebrating International Women’s Day
Every day is a great day to celebrate the amazing women in your life, but International Women’s Day gives you an extra reason to do just that.
For over a century, International Women’s Day, held on 8 March each year, has marked a day of celebration and advocacy for women’s rights and equality around the world.
There are so many fantastic women in the UK with skills that are undervalued and go unrecognised.
Research from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has shown that if women’s employment equalled men’s, economies would be more resilient and economic growth would be higher. Their research also highlighted that adding one more woman in a firm’s senior management or corporate board – while keeping the size of the board unchanged – is associated with an 8–13 basis point higher return on assets.
It’s time to right these wrongs.
Women in leadership
The 2021 UN theme for International Women’s Day is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”.
The theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future.
At Inflo, we have women working at different seniority levels in teams and regions across the business. As of March 2021, 30% of our workforce are female.
This is in stark contrast to research by International Women’s Day that only 19% of the technology force is made up of women. And this is on the backdrop of women making up 49% of the UK’s workforce.
An imbalance, yes, but there are reasons to celebrate…
Changing the status quo
Often there can be a gender stereotype when people think of developers or a development team in a business. At Inflo, our development team is made up of both women and men who lead the creation and growth of our products.
Take for example Erin Austin, Software Product Owner at Inflo.
Erin has worked at Inflo for less than a year starting her role as one of our Tester’s in the development team.
Fast-forward 6 months and she was soon promoted to Product Owner where she leads on shaping, driving, and defining our products. As product owner, Erin ensures the most valuable, sustainable, and customer-oriented functionality of the Inflo software, whilst advocating a full agile software development lifecycle.
Hannah Farmborough, Senior Marketing Manager at Inflo, commented: “It’s great to see the diversity across the business especially within the development team. Erin Austin, our Product Owner delivered a fantastic session for us at our bi-weekly Inflo Community Breakfasts, all about Women in Technology and what we can all do to support diversity. Inflo is the perfect environment to support growth and I would encourage all females with an interest in tech to get in touch.”
Achieving an equal future doesn’t stop there.
Olwyn Connolly, Chief Customer Officer at Inflo, commented: “The efforts of achieving equality when it comes to the role of women in business is not lost on me – it is even more glaring being a female leader of a tech business who is an accountant. But despite being in the business of numbers we don’t care to much for those statistics and I certainly don’t feel like one – they simply don’t reflect what it is like to work at Inflo.”
